As a stoic observer of modern society, I cannot help but be fed up and pissed off at the sad and hilarious reality TV that has become a reflection of our culture's obsession with beauty. It's as if we've become the worst version of Narcissus, the mythology of a beautiful youth, staring at our own reflections in the pool of social media, captivated by our own self-image.
In ancient mythology, Narcissus was a young man who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water, so much so that he could not bear to leave his own beauty behind and ultimately wasted away, consumed by his own vanity. Sadly, we see a similar phenomenon in today's society, where the obsession with physical appearance has reached absurd levels. From Botox to plastic surgery, from filters to Photoshop, we are constantly striving for the perfect selfie, the perfect angle, the perfect image to project to the world.
The rise of reality TV is a glaring example of this cultural obsession with beauty. Shows like "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" or "The Bachelor" depict a world where physical appearance is paramount, and the pursuit of superficial perfection is celebrated. We watch as people compete for attention, fame, and validation based on their looks, rather than their talents or character. It's a sad and hilarious spectacle that leaves me scratching my head in bewilderment.
The irony is that while our culture is obsessed with beauty, we have become the worst versions of Narcissus. We have lost touch with our true selves, constantly seeking external validation and approval, unable to look beyond our own reflections. We have become shallow and superficial, judging others and ourselves based on appearance rather than substance. We have created a society where self-worth is measured by the number of likes and followers, where comparison and envy are rampant, and where authenticity and vulnerability are often sacrificed at the altar of social media.
It's both tragic and comical how we have become a society that values image over substance, where beauty is prized above all else, and where reality TV has become a distorted mirror that reflects our collective obsession with our own reflections. We have lost sight of the true essence of beauty, which lies in the diversity, complexity, and uniqueness of each individual. We have forgotten that true beauty comes from within, from being true to ourselves, and from cultivating genuine connections with others.
So, my fellow stoics, let us rise above the shallow waters of superficiality and strive for a society that values substance over appearance, authenticity over pretense, and empathy over judgment. Let us break free from the spell of Narcissus and rediscover the joy and beauty of being human, flawed and imperfect as we are. Let us reject the sad and hilarious reality TV of our culture's obsession with beauty and embrace a deeper, more meaningful understanding of what it means to be truly beautiful. It's time to turn the tide on this tragicomedy and create a world where self-worth is not measured by likes, but by the depth of our character and the kindness in our hearts. Let us be the antidote to the worst version of Narcissus and choose to celebrate the beauty that lies within us all.
